TubeNet

As a few tubenetters know, I concluded a few weeks ago that the massive Conn BBb I've had for several months is too big for my travel schedule and for the ensembles I play in. I don't really want to sell it, but for a guy who has said he only needs one tuba, two at most, I have way too many tubas, and this one is the one it makes the most sense to sell.

If the reserve isn't met, it's going off to TubaTinker the next day for the work that is mentioned in the auction page. Then we'll see. I may still sell it after that, or I may just decide it's okay to have three tubas.

Wow, the reserve already got met. I think I'm going to look back wistfully at the period I've owned this tuba. I'm not second guessing selling it, because it's definitely too big for my needs.

Tonight I was just sitting there in a community band concert playing in my usual way. Because the performance was outside with a potentially large crowd, every section was filled out a bit by people who aren't normally part of the band. One of the fill-in tubas ended up provoked with me because it seems he thought I was trying to overwhelm his playing.

Not guilty, but it's true that so much metal will roar almost without trying. I love it, but I don't need it, especially if it's going to piss off fellow tubists!

It sounds to me as if he is the one with the problem.

Reminiscent of what happened at the 2010 Jumbo Summit...

The guy was playing a 20J, and it seemed to me he was holding his own quite well. But apparently he didn't see it that way...

Even though it now appears that I'm not sending this instrument your way (who knows what the new owner might do?), I am coming over there myself around the twelfth or so of July and would love to drive up and meet you and maybe get some equipment envy of my own upon seeing your arsenal.

When I play outside on a sousaphone, it always sounds feeble, because I'm in a kind of "cone of silence" on the wrong side of the bell. I imagine to two sousaphone players playing equally loud, each hears the other as louder.

I was going to bid but had a gig that started at 7:30 - couldn't be there at the end so I stayed out. Looks like someone got a tremendous deal.
