Just curious... do folks on this board take the time to report these bogus items?

Never contact a seller outside of Ebay!!!!!!!!!!! Keep it Legit for you safety. No real deals on the side. Even after a bogus item has been removed it can be right back on there with another contact hoping someone will take advantage of this GREAT DEAL! Send messages and see what kind of responses you get.

The listing is gone what was the smoking gun that gave it away as a scam

I would never buy a tuba on eBay from seller with '0' feedback unless it was possible to pay on collection.

Of course... even the greatest-looking listing can be a scam.

However... a listing that insists that you contact them before bidding or one that requires payment methods that are just strange... are a dead give-away.

If you ever have a question about a listing... simply email the seller. No response or one that just sounds odd should tell a person something. I buy a lot of stuff off Ebay and have never fallen for a scam. Most of them are pretty easy to spot.

Also, use eBay's buyer protection services. I bought a "new, never been used" shortwave radio from a guy last year and it was neither new nor 'never been used'. As a matter of fact, it was defective with the well-known problems of the particular model. I contacted the seller who said to send it back and he would refund my money, so I did with delivery confirmation. He received it but hadn't sent the refund in three weeks so I kicked it to eBay's investigators. They took the information and documentation from me and had a check for me in about a week. It was 'only' $250 so the waiting wasn't too bad of a thing but I did get my money back.

This isn't always true. You can contact SOME sellers outside of eBay. If the seller has an established brick and mortar business that has a good reputation you can probably trust them. There are many well established music shops that sell on eBay.

It is best to go through eBay's process. It protects both the buyer and the seller, but you don't ALWAYS have to. Things to look for if you want to go outside of the process are phone number, physical address and official web site. If you are suspicious, give the business a call or google them. Also, what kind of feedback do they have?

There are a few reasons people go around eBay's process. Sometimes if a seller has an item posted for a long time without a sale they might entertain a lower offer. Also, some folks avoid paying paypal fees this way.
