Just poking a bit of fun at the post in another thread of folks being concerned with the whole horn and NOT the mechanics.

Absolutely agreed with your first post.

Just one look at the rotors on that horn and you could tell it had been cooked.

Project horn?

By comparison, I emailed with Dave Fedderly about the Scherzer CC down at BBC. He described it as a nice tuba, kind of between a Miraphone 186 and a Meinl-Weston 32. I'm sure it's better than the eBay one.

Here are pics of a Scherzer CC I have in the shop. Pretty nice horn. I changed the 5th from a 2-3 combination to a flat step and minor shortening of the bugle. Note the name under the Scherzer engraving... Jhn. Sandner:

That looks like the same paddle bar/linkage assembly that's made by JinBao. WW/BW may have had some parts left over from their Allora tubas. I've been know to use those assemblies in cases where the original linkage is missing or destroyed beyond repair. I think the links in question are assembled backwards.

Yeah... I just took a 2nd look at the auction. The Scherzer that's here in the shop is built quite different from the one WW/BW has listed. The brace style is even different. The valve circuits are different... especially those on the back of the horn. The leadpipe is WAY different, too. It's almost as it the horn is not a Scherzer at all except for the bell. Of interest on both horns is that the leadpipe brace is the same as Miraphone uses. There is quite a difference in the 1st branch off the 4th rotor. The Ebay horn in form looks more like a BBb tuba to me.

I get a kick out of the similarities between some of the early European horns. It's obvious on some like these tubas that those 'cottage' industries simply bought components from others and just did the final assembly. Even today... I think Schmidt-Meinl makes most of the European valvesets... and it wouldn't surprise me if I was told that some of the European horns contain Asian components. I've suspected it for some time, anyway. Doesn't matter to me as long the quality is dependable.
