Is this normal corrosion or results of a fire?

It appears to be silver plate that's NEVER been polished or properly cared for. Probably stored in a basement or a place that has gas heat.

I wonder what and how long it would take to remove all that tarnish....

Suppose it was in a fire... how badly can a house fire damage a tuba?

He has it listed as a "King" tuba, but that is probably based on the King mouthpiece that is with it. It appears to be a Conn 20K to me, and yes, I have seen tarnish this bad on horns that have been stored for a long time.

Black is Beautiful! LJV do you know where this Hirsbrunner is now?

Yeah... Temperatures like that probably wouldn't make the brazed and silver-soldered sub-assemblies like braces and pistons come apart. But... all it takes is about 450 degrees F. to melt solder joints. 1200 degrees F will crystalize regular soft solder.

I think it's probably just badly tarnished.

What the heck is Tryplen?

Never mind. I found this old thread on the Meinlschmidt composite rotors. I didn't realize Conn had fooled with this concept, too!

About an hour, and that's fast.

I think I might buy this horn...so IF I win it, I will take some detailed pictures before and after the tarnish removal and I will time how long it took (for whomever cares...)
