Never saw an 4-in-line compensating block unattached to an instrument before. Even with 3+1 comp blocks that sight is rare, so the only one I saw was a demo sample at a B&H/Besson clinic 30+ years ago.
It puzzles me that you don’t tell the maker. I don’t think it is from Schreiber & Keilwerth, rather it would be from the MW/B&S factory in Markneukirchen. It would originally have been intended for an Eb Besson 983.
Please tell me right or wrong.

I could be wrong, it has been known to happen on occasion

but that doesn't look like the valves on my 983.

This was purchased several years ago from Walter Nirschl, and was intended for B/M Symphonic tuba. It is believed to be made by Bauerfiend. It was not intended for nor made by Besson. Thanks for looking and the questions!

I have in vain tried to find online documentation for the said valve maker. The given spelling definitely is wrong. Americans who were not taught German invariably get the German sequences of ie and ei wrong because their phonetics are the opposite in English and German. But there is one more potential spelling trap, where the more common spelling is Bauernfeind (which means ‘enemy of farmers’).
That name leads to an Austrian general music store, which mostly looks like a retailer with a repair shop.
An old posting in a trumpet forum has the other possible spelling, but the provided link is dead:

Sir, a quick yahoo search of "Bauerfeind valves" on yahoo pulls up dozens if not hundreds of results.....I may have have gotten "ie" and "ei" backwards, but that was an honest mistake with my spelling. Never the less this is still a very well known and respected valve maker.

Bauerfeind valves are top of the line... It's what you'll find on Hirsbrunner, sterling, Gronitz, and pretty much any other European piston instruments from companies that don't make valves themselves.
