I had a 28J once. It had a 22" flare and a very small stem. It was a front-action horn though. Strange looking horn!

how'd it play?
It played OK. ... just OK in my opinion, anyway. Understandably, those horns were built in the day when 'bigger was better'. Conn liked to put bigger bells on old model horns and call them 'improved'.

I saw, but did not play, a helicon with that same exaggerated flair into a very large bell. They take on a cartoonish visual aspect when the bell is out of proportion like that.
