$550 for a four-valve tuba seems like a good deal. Condition on a horn that old might be "iffy."

I don't deal on Craig's List. If this popped up on Ebay for $550... I'd probably be 'on it'. .... even if it needs a valve job!

I'm reading the description and I don't see that. His language about the trade is ambiguous, but I interpret it as he will trade this tuba and some money, for a better instrument; [otherwise] he wants $550 for the tuba.
If you're local and it looks like something with potential (have no idea), get on over there and play it - bring a tuner and try to verify that it's built to 440 A.
