This is the exact reason why I very rarely sell anything on Ebay.
It seems to almost never fail that anything I'm selling seems to attract scammers and/or non-paying bidders. I've even had people go through the multi-click process to "buy it now" only to not pay or email me saying that they made a mistake and only wanted to register one bid. I've called BS each time as Ebay forces buy-it-now to be a multi-step process for that exact reason. The response from the buyers is simply not to pay for the item which means that I have to eat the time and the fees it took to list and "sell" the item in the first place.
I've also had people want to pay cash for internet purchases, want me to ship to some third party who will receive and inspect the item for buyer, want to overpay for an item and get a refund, etc., etc. No way.
It has been my experience that the more expensive an item is, the worse the problems get. And since Ebay is almost completely buyer centric these days, any action from them is virtually unheard of when you're a seller. I've reported people and opened disputes several times and Ebay hasn't done ANYTHING about it.
And forget about craigslist. It's full of criminals/scammers/flakes/deadbeats/and items of questionable origin. Once I went to buy a (then) few year old motorcycle only to discover that the seller didn't have the title (and believe me, that is the #1 question to ask when buying a vehicle...I asked it).
I find it works best to sell via enthusiast sites relevant to the item in question, such as Tubenet, with expectations clearly spelled out ahead of time.
