It's never been much of a secret that some of the student-level Besson brass was made in India. I've had a couple of the 'cheapie' Besson copies here and they were basically unplayable. I have one badged 'Tri-Star' hanging from the ceiling of my shop that's so bad it isn't even worthy of using for parts.

I suppose like everything else.... there are some excellent horn makers in India and other parts of Asia but I seriously doubt if this is one of them. Not for that price, anyway.

The Hakam Din Group was founded by Mr. Hakam Din, a craftsman who made musical instruments in Sialkot, a small city on the Indian sub-continent. Its history began more than one hundred years ago, in the 1890s, when the Royal Indian Army was in need of Highland Bagpipes and asked Mr. Din to produce them. Although at that time Mr. Din was not able to meet the entire Bagpipe needs of the Army's bands, he received a letter of appreciation from the Director of Music, Captain A. Eldon of the Baroda State Army.

Yeah, right: just like Gustav Schiller founded Schiller Musical Instrumentsin 1879--at age 19, mind you, in Berlin.

BTW, was Hakam any relation to Gunga?
