M. Martin Eb -- German-made with "M. Martin" as the listed maker. The horn looks awfully good for something from the 1930s, possibly too good. Anyone heard of this maker? (Klaus?)
Not Klaus but there are two listings in
The New Langwill Index for builders named "Martin" whose first initial would be "M" - both Max: one in Berlin and one in Markneukirchen; both listed as "BI" (brass instrument).
The impression on the bell looks more modern to me than 1930 and I have to wonder if it isn't along the lines of the Schiller American Heritage instruments from Frankfurt, Germany (cough, cough).
The name "Martin" seems to be almost as common in Germany as is "Smith" or "Jones" in English speaking countries but the Langwill is pretty well up on most builders of any consequence.
Recently I had a late 19th Century five string banjo in my shop for restoration. The music store that brought it to me was excited that the name "Martin" was engraved in an ivory plate on the fingerboard. It was obviously not from the shop of C. F. Martin but that didn't make it crap - most likely a Buckbee stencil built for the Martin Bros. of NYC. A nice piece but not from the famed C. F. Martin guitar factory ...
