Re: Another old rotary fixer-upper
F or Eb (I'm guessing Eb).
A good thing about Frank is that he is always forthright in his descriptions even though he isn't a brass expert. In particular with this instrument: "Unfortunatelly there are several thin cracks at the brass, so the brass seems to be brickly. I dont know if this can be fixed, so I offer the instrument as a display object.".
Take a look at the fourth photo to understand the translation of "brickly" ...

“Brass is brickly, maybe only for display”
I certainly appreciate this reasonable description.

Re: Another old rotary fixer-upper
I just do my best. Fortunately (from my perspective) we have enough people on here who like to bring these older horns back to playing condition, that it's worth posting something like this. I don't have the skill to do this work myself.
Speaking of which, how's the Schuster doing?

If the valves aren't too worn, they are probably around the right size to be harvested to build a blokebasso

My response wasn't meant to be a derogatory comment on your post. I always look at Frank's listings (bought one of them) and he seems to have a bit more knowledge than he will admit. I thought the same thing that Marty mentioned below about the possibility of a donor horn for the valves.Heavy_Metal wrote:I just do my best. It is doing very well thank you! I've reworked the valves and it has become my main player, perfect for playing with guitars and vocals. Nice big voice even when quiet and very good intonation.Heavy_Metal wrote:Speaking of which, how's the Schuster doing?
Just before the Schuster came along I considered a Meinl Weston 11 for almost three times the price of the Schuster. Later bought a MW 10 (three valve but otherwise the same) on Craigslist which made me even happier with the Schuster.
