Karl Zeiss fixer-upper

Post by Heavy_Metal »

this name is on our list of B&S stencils. Looks like it was a school horn:

This seller has at least one other such horn (Amati Kraslice) for sale.

I'm going to see if I can get that for a rational price, as much for sentimentality as anything. One of these (with this stencil), school owned, carried me through a lot of very enjoyable experiences in high school.

Yep. Been thinking about how best to get the repairs done.

The dentwork on the bottom and back bows will require the removal of the guard wires. That's not a 'biggie' since the original bow guards are gone, anyway. Just putting new sousaphone guards back on after the dent work will be easier than straightening the original guards.

Might also want to add a guard to the fourth valve loop where it parallels the bottom bow. I had that done on my Sonora, since it was always picking up dents.

Let us know how it goes!

Well, I appreciate that, Bloke. You're a mensch.

Somebody else wanted it, but was bidding incrementally in the last twenty seconds. With twenty seconds to go I bid $4.55 above the threshold where I'd rather have the money than the tuba. If I had waited until ten seconds to go, I could have gotten it for thirty or forty dollars cheaper. But I'm not complaining.

I got the "shipped" notice this afternoon, so I guess I'll be able to tell more in a week or so.

I had thought about the possibility of getting tubing, if need be, from Tom. Do you reckon the leadpipe from the copy would fit? It's already patched once, so it occurred to me there may be other problems there as well.

After a tech messed this tuba up even more than a few generations of high school students did, and another one put it back together pretty well (at which point I loaned it to a friend for nearly a year, who didn't hurt it) and then I fixed it some from that point before messing it up to the point of unplayability again, a trip to the blokeplace last Friday has finally turned this into a nice playing tuba. Still ugly as a mud fence in a rain storm, but nice to play.
