Sure looks like a Boem and Meinl product to me. the wrap and ferrules are similar to the later York Master.

It's a Bohm & Meinl. Stenciled by Custom Music. Hence the name of Sanders. This horn is nearly identical to the Marzan tubas except that the main tuning slide is in the conventional location... on the bottom instead of the top. The horn was probably made in the late 60's or early 70's.

Did Custom use an apostrophe? Not that I've ever seen. That doesn't mean it's not possible, but I also didn't realize Fred was importing before about 1974. Interesting.

This is just an inquiry about the Sander tuba and its name and the use of that name. The late George Black, a rather well known New York freelance pro, used a SANDER 4 rotary (string driven) BBb tuba for most of his career which included the New York City Symphony, Band of America, Goldman Band and the like as well as a lot of Broadway shows. His Sander tuba was German made, I believe. So there is SANDER, Sanders and Sander's, that last probably being a diction or typing mistake. I don't know which of these SANDER thingies this tuba is. I know Sanders was a Custom Music stencil.

I think you are on target. There was a Sander (no 'S') that was the pre-Custom Music era. Sanders is the stencil of Custom Music. Don't have a clue where the apostrophe came from... probably just a matter of interpretation.

I've had several of the Bohm & Meinl-made Custom Music 'Sanders' stencils in the shop. This is one of those 'stencils'.

How do they all compare to each other?

Around 1972, while in the West Point Band I wanted a "real tuba" I owned and used a Conn 24J and used one of the band's Kings that looked like the current model but were .750 bore. People told me I should switch to C so when the section heavyweight player went to Custom Music he brought back 2 Rudy Meinl C's, one for him, one for me, and 2 Sandner Bb's for the section leader and the other guy who was from Philadelphia. After two weeks and a big concert on the Rudy we all agreed that I sounded better on one of the Sandners so I bought it. My first tuba purchase at 1325.00 as opposed to the five valve Rudy at 1350.00. While at Walter Sear's shop with it he told me about the Sander company destroyed during the war and that this guy was trying to cash in onthe name(like Selman instruments now). It was laid out like a Miraphone with a slicer onthe bottom and clockwork springs. Kind of too thick for a Cerveny but it did play well.FWIW, Ed

The valve block appears to be slightly higher & the 1st slide looks "flipped" compared to the YM. Doesn't quite look as centered as the York Master, but it does feature the "dumb 4th slide arrangement, possibly slightly less dumb if the valves actually sit a bit higher. Is it missing all the nickel silver, or is that photo quality? Interesting variant.

That's because it's not a York 'Master'. It's a Sanders a la Custom Music. Like the one in this image sitting next to my Marzan. The Marzan is on the left... with the tuning slide on top.

Well... It turns out that the auction 'Sanders' is the same horn as the one in the picture I posted. That horn was reconditioned by me and 'sold South' in 2011. Good horn.
