The story about the horn and the Vincent Lopez Orchestra checks out. Martin advertising of the period lists the Lopez Orchestra specifically and somewhere I have a photo of the band with an instrument just like this. 1923 was just before the "Handcraft" designation was put on Martin instruments (that was added in the Spring of 1924). I've always liked the smaller bells like this one on sousaphones.

I have absolutely no connection with this instrument or its' seller but I'd be willing to bet that it is a very nice instrument, indeed!
