Great photo. What a player. Looks like a cigar in his right hand, perhaps a taste acquired from his boss, John Philip Sousa. Mouthpieces pick up odors, but would a tuba start smelling like cigars? If so, it would be terrible taking a deep "snatch" breath from such an instrument.

It's hard to tell from behind, but the ferrules and strap rings look like Conn. Also, I think the Conn New Wonder recording bell horns were on a 90° angle like that one pictured.
