do you think that is a decent price for the Conn?

Looks to be only 3 valve, not sure if that's a good idea?

Hmm, I always thought 4 valves were better than 3, in terms of intonation etc.?

yes but what level are you at? if you're a beginner then i doubt you need the 4th valve.

The tuba doesn't have a hard case, just a soft gig bag. Does that make it less of a deal?

It's a fine tuba at a fine price. I marched one of these throughout high school, and most of the section played them in concert season as well. They are fine horns, and this is a quite reasonable price. If you want a tuba that you'll win a major orchestra audition on for $900, this ain't it, and good luck to you. But for this horn at this price point, there is no reason to hesitate. It's a decent horn at a good price. It will serve you just fine at this point in life and it will give you plenty of headroom to develop as a player.
