New One On Me!

Post by Dan Schultz »

Whatever the straps are over the valve section on this horn is a new one on me!

From description:
"Some repair shop added a lever assembly cover made of brass but we removed most of it and can remove the rest of it if buyer wants. We left it on because of the extra strength and stability it gives the horn. "

Is that where idea came from?

I can read.

I just more-or-less wondered why anyone went to the trouble to do this.... unless of course, the horn was being played by a trained bear!

I wonder how much it "deadens" the sound with all that extra bracing and contact points.

Don’t some students behave like untrained bears when handed schoolowned instruments?

The idea behind this design looks like having a newer equivalent:

This could also be good for anyone who plays tuba while unicycling, skating, etc. Many years ago when I fell off a pier with my BBb 190 in a bag, something like that might have helped. At least, it would have transferred the damage to the outer bows and bell, not sure if that's help. As it was, it was repairable and, as far as I know, that tuba has gone on to live a long and productive life in the hands of someone who isn't as accident prone (and can play it in tune.)

schlepporello wrote:The photo that Klaus posted makes more sense as it is obviously an attempt to protect the linkage. What doesn't make sense though is to attach this guard to brass tubing. It seems like you'd just transfer damage from one spot to another.
Maybe they considered the tubing easier to repair than the transmission.

Lots of people have a horn just for Pictures, perhaps this is just one for Petrushka...
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

A disgronificator? Hmmmm, that kind of reminds me of a particular military device...

Bizarre. Maybe he needed to ship it by mule and couldn't find any bubble wrap.
