How did I miss this. It was less than 15 minutes from me. Never heard of the place.

I have heard it said that the older Cervenys are better than the newer. Is this you experience? Anyone? Do the older ones have thicker brass?

What important differences have you noticed between the older vs newer which leads you to prefer the older?58mark wrote:That is very much my experience, especially the BBb ones.

I had a brand new 686-BBb in 1997 and it was a fantastic horn. I wish I would of kept it! In 2005 I bought a brand new red brass 681 like the one in this thread and it was the most lifeless tuba i've owned that was in decent shape. You are right on the lack of tone color on the newer horns.58mark wrote:You know, I've never been able to really figure that out. . The horns made after about 1993 seem to be made out of a lower grade of brass, the valve are always clankier, soldering worse, and they lack warmth and attractive tone colors
Some of the cc tubas seem "ok", but it's mainly the student line horns like in this eBay ad that are the worst offenders
