How can a brass instrument be a "great player" without a main tuning slide?

When you put a tuning slide in an instrument, you're admitting right there that it isn't perfect.

More like tuning slides are needed because of temperature changes, tuning to other players/groups, etc. It's also good to have tuning slides to empty condensation as it's not ideal to have water keys on every slide.
