I'm thinking it is a 36j too.

I actually was just pulling up Tubenet to post the same tuba and ask if it was a 36j and there was your post at the top of the page. SPOOKY!

Yes... it's a 4/4 Conn. Not the large bore of the short-action 2XJ tubas.

Actually... that appears to be a 2XJ body case. You don't normally see the leadpipe on the hinge side.

I have one of these tubas and it's similar in size to 4/4 Kings. The small end of the Conn bell is a bit bigger than those of 4/4 King tubas. A King bell will just slip into the 4/4 Conn but the Conn bell will not work on the King.

How flat (or "remarkably dead-on pitch") is the 3rd partial F and E-natural ?
Not sure about the 3rd partial because the horn is on another continent than I am and it needs a valve job and leadpipe. I experimented putting the horn in CC by using other branches and I can safely say it's a much better horn in BBb than in CC.

Isn't 6" the most common for 4/4 ?
The guy probably measured the OUTSIDE of the receiver! This is a 4/4 horn. There's a way big difference to get to the 7 1/4" tenon on the 2XJ tubas.
