Don'tcha just wonder what caused that sort of damage! It's easy to understand the need for rim repair. But... to have to apply a patch THAT large makes me wonder!

It was used in an infantry regimental band- maybe someone took a shot at it?

It is puzzling as to how this large spot received so much damage but the other side of the bell is good. The general condition of the instrument is not that of something which has had much abuse.

Same with very old people. It doesn't take much, and then trying to fix anything only seems to make it worse. I bet that brass is brittle as yesterday's toast.

From the mid 30's early 40's. It is amazing it wasn't melted down for shell casings.

Many of those old European brass instruments have VERY brittle brass. What makes it worse is that most/all of them were made of thin-gauge brass back then.
I'm thinking that annealing/tempering techniques have improved a lot since then!
