That (catalog-style) photo has been on the WWBW site for years. I'd doubt that they actually have a detachable bell version in stock, seeing as how it's not mentioned anywhere in the description.
If it does exist though, is the purpose to allow for a recording bell (probably not) or to make it easier to fly with (more likely)?

I've seen that for a while now as well. I figured it was some sort of removable "tone" ring.
