I'm surprised that 90 years later a great sousaphone like the 38K, and silver plated, looks to be in mint condition. Could be a miracle, or an expensive restoration, but at what point do you start wondering what's wrong with it?

Not even close to 'mint' condition, just really well taken care of over the decades. You can still see scratches, small dings and silver-plating worn down to raw brass in spots. And on old horns like that, the silver-plating was thick, so it must have been played a lot over the years for it to wear down to the base-metal brass

Just posting to brag that I corroborated in the purchase of this horn. It is everything it was promised to be and more; the gold wash is immaculate and there are no dents! It’s in better shape than many 5yo horns and the sound is immense.

...and this was had (shipped Greyhound to NYC) for $2K.

Deals and dreams to come true. OP, thanks SO much for sharing!
