A question about private messages

Perhaps the moderators can answer this....

When I write a Private Message, it appears to just sit in my OUTBOX for a while before being sent. How often are they sent, and why don't they go out immediately?

Thanks! This way I know than when it's no longer in my OUTBOX, the recipient has seen it. Works for me!
