For contextual advertisements, Google's servers use a cache of the page to determine a set of high-value keywords. If keywords have been cached already, advertisements are served for those keywords based on the AdWords bidding system. (More details are described in the AdSense patent.)
Until every "Keyword" found on this whole forum that triggers these ads is removed from this forum they will show up....
As I posted in the last version of this thread, google ads make very little sense as there are very few businesses using them that are actually related to this board. Thus, we get the more "profitable" sites for google and this forum. Maybe another revenue source should be sought....

Maybe take a screenshot each time it happens and send it to Sean?
I don't know. It's a last ditch type idea. It seems as though nothing is done/will be done about it...

I guess to be contrary, I get no ads that are even slightly offensive. They are about musical things or computer technical things. I had been getting the dating ads but have not in a couple of months. Sure would like to see the routine which distributes the advertising. Doesn't make sense to me.
If the ads can't be put under control, perhaps donation drives like public radio does might be appropriate.

It seems odd to me that no matter how often I 'click' the TubeNet homepage... I do not get any of those ads. But... EVERY time I 'click' on the TubeNet Forum, they come up. Not so much on the other forums. Looks to me like those ads are content-driven.

I right-clicked on AdChoices over on the right hand column and opened in a new window at this location:
http://support.google.com/adsense/bin/s ... dT=ImageAd
This page may be user-specific so you may have to perform the right-click yourself on the little right arrow at the top right of the right ad column.
There appear to be techniques available, e.g. the Ads Preferences Manager, there to modify your preferences and avoid the offending ads. And there's always Ad-Block.

This thread is NOT about how to stop seeing the ads yourself. That's easy, and has been discussed in multiple threads ones and over.
(And I regret my tongue-in-cheek response to the thread that has now been deleted.)
This thread is about a warning for a lesson Wade learned the hard way. Until this board is changed structurally, in ways that only Sean can do, then DO NOT recommend this board to your minor students. If you do, you may be fine, but remember that it only takes one parent who is (nuts/naive/mad at you for some unrelated reason/having a bad day/etc.) to turn the issue into something that will cause you much trouble than anything your students might have gained from this board is worth.
DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOARD TO KIDS, UNLESS YOU DON'T MIND BEING ACCUSED OF BAD THINGS!!!!!

True, and not just because of the threat of adult ads but also because of the content of the board itself. You might get the ad filters changed, but you're not going to clean up the threads to everyone's satisfaction, period. It's the juveniles who also have the greatest pollution potential because they aren't aware of or don't care about the full consequences of their actions. And yes, some juveniles are middle aged or worse before they reach physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual maturity--if they ever do. I believe I can speak from personal experience here.
That said, I think it's a worthwhile ongoing endeavor to call out any behavior that you find objectionable. How else will the juveniles learn? 'When the student is ready, the teacher appears' is meaningful on several levels.

Removing pictures from the TubeNet servers was only part of the proposal. Putting the pictures on an outside server and providing a link would change who is paying for the bandwidth. The point was to change the way that the site is being funded. The advertising (no matter what the content) provides the funds. If TubeNet costs could be lowered, then, perhaps the advertising could be removed except for specific music-related advertising provided by sponsors. If that advertising does not pay all of the bills, then some other funding alternative to free-form advertising could be looked at.

Visiting and using the site does imply financial sponsorship. The advertising is being generated by the visits of TubeNet users. To be completely honest, I have never seen anything harsher than the Russian dating sites. I can tell many of the sites I had been visiting in the last week or so because it is being reflected in the advertising I see. I've been looking at a method to read Usenet news at home without an ISP. I get advertising for Giganews, the major Usenet supplier. I've been looking for deals on amateur radio gear. I've been seeing advertising for Gigaparts.com, a major supplier of amateur radio equipment.
I'm not trying to say or imply that *all* of the advertising is generated by things the users are looking at but it seems to me that much of mine is. If the users of TubeNet and the owner of TubeNet want to get rid of advertising that TubeNet is not directly in control of, a different funding and management structure needs to be instituted.

Elephant, have you enabled hosts files on your computer?

Wade's point is not about what *he* sees but, rather, what other people see when they access TubeNet.
If I tell someone who is interested in the Tuba, "Hey, look at TubeNet. Good info there." and, when they access it, something offensive comes up, *I* now have a problem.
Nothing *I* do to *my* computer can solve this problem. The only thing that can solve this problem is to sever the connection between TubeNet and offensive advertising.

I get his point, but if the hosts files do indeed clear up the advertising, couldn't one just say: "you might want to visit this site, but make sure your hosts files on your computer are up to date."
FWIW, here were my suggestions:

Even at this late date, so many computer users think of the Internet and computers as "magic boxes" and refuse to comprehend how it all works. That keeps a million IT workers in jobs but it is a little unrealistic to expect most people to know what a /etc/hosts file *is*, *where* it is and, furthermore, how to tweek it to keep offensive advertising off their computer screens.
Kinda like inviting a blind man to walk through a cow pasture and telling him, "There might be cowpies out there. If you don't want to step in them, be sure to look closely."

I hope to God that some of you are never parents or teachers if you cannot differentiate between the two! Maybe you would like to compare the beer chicks to bestiality sites, too? "Dude, set me up with a link to some animal/human action." "Sure, man. Just go to TubeNet."
Please do not call me stupid or insane (that Florida fellow in another thread had the delightful suggestion that I should return to the circus. Go to hell, dude).
One is worse than the other, yes, but both are bad. How can you not see this? I like you Wade, but you're not catching on here. A five page thread full of lewd jokes after an initial posting of a woman in some s&m lingerie riding a tuba is something that should concern those concerned about parents and children on the forum.

To me, since I don't see any of the sketchy advertisement, I have to say that one is clearly worse than the other.
(Actually, as we are speaking, the ads are far from being offensive, they are almost praise worthy)

Suggesting this site to minor students seems to fly in the face of the number one laughed about bit of advice given on this site: "go ask your teacher".
Students that are curious enough, and computer savy enough will find TubeNet on their own. The parents can then blame someone else for what their children see on the web.
