I think most often Barney could be seen with cymbals in the town band.
maybe, ocassionally bass drum, too?

Andy Griffith was a music major in college. He listed his instrument as trombone, though he could most often be seen playing tuba. His Andy Taylor character played tuba in (while he led) the Mayberry Town Band. I remember him wearing a tuxedo with a huge silver sousaphone on a Carol Burnett variety special sometime in the mid 1970s.

Don Knotts will be missed.
