As we're under the Pacific migratory flyway, we get hordes of geese right about now. It's also right about now that the grass seed farmers are planting their spring crops in the lowlands along the Willamette.
The geese get very fat and the farmers get mad, but that's the way things go. The farmers can't really yell too loudly, as many will burn their harvested fields in the fall, making the air thick with smoke.
I believe the protected status of geese is a treaty matter between Canada and the US.
OTOH, I saw my first turkey buzzard last week, so spring must be on the way.

For me, looking up in the sky on a crisp cold day and seeing endless V formations honking their way south (or north) is very powerful.
For some reason, however, the geese have taken a real liking to the Chicago area and seem pleased as punch to plop and poop in and on every open area around here. Golf courses, cemeteries, open park areas. Heck, even the Catholic cemetery system in using artificial birth control (apparently Humanae Vitae does not apply to fowl). Right now, there's a big controversy over the amounts of geese who have taken up residence in Grant Park's Butler Field, the site of the Petrillo Music Shell (former home of the Grant Park Symphony and still used for mass conert events). Seems that concert goers who love to spread their balnkets out on the lawn are quite upset at the souveniers they get to take home with them (Mommy, these are big raisins. . .).
Nature and civilization at odds again. Whatchagonnado?
