As I understand it, one simply stops down and opens the shutter on the camera until a few strikes have been recorded. The challenge is being in the right place at the right time, without yourself being at risk or getting the camera soaked. The photographer in this case was standing on a hill in a thunderstorm--not unrisky behavior.
