Just returned from the Labor Day trip to Ohio.
Always a realist, I did not attempt to get into the OSU-Northern Ill football game but instead visited the Almamater of Ohio University (Harvard on the Hocking).
Main reason for the trip was to take Michael to see his first real college band, and who better than the Marchin 110. Game started at 7pm but we arrived at 5:30 to ensure parking space and make it over to the "tailgate lot" to watch the arrival of the band. As an 81 graduate, they were everything I remembered. Loud, Proud, and Wild. Total of 12 Sousas (2 were young ladies) They strutted, Duck Walked, Hopped, and spun their sousas as they went.
Lots of dancing and juking as they moved around the "parade route" and through the party zone. Much to the loud approval of the fans. My son informed me at one point that they piece the band was playing at that time (salvation of brass) is one that he has to learn for his high school.
As it was opening day, the band sponsored 6 local high school bands on the field with them before the game. Five of the bands were 60 members or smaller. I swear one only had 40 students and were dressed in tee shirts and kaki shorts. But they played their hearts out. The other high school band gave OU a run on membership on the field.
They marched out on to the field, played a couple of numbers and the National Anthem. Well done by all.
At half time (with the Bobcats leading 23 to 3) the 110 took the field and put on a spectacular marching display with suberb musicianship. The high school bands returned and played another couple of songs finishing with a rendition Kelly Clarksons' "Walk Away" and played in typical OU 110 fashion....starting straight up, until the "pop" refrain when the entire field of musicians went wild dancing all over the field.
A great show! I think it made quite an impression on my son, who still wants to go to OSU and Dot the I....but will keep OU in mind as a top alternative.
Oh...the Bobcats won the game so I read, as (in the great tradition of OU football) we left after the halftime show.
(it was raining and my 9 year old was "done")
