15th Asian Games

They have something kinda like the Olympics going on in Doha, Qatar (that's pronounced KAT-ter--Doha is doha). Anyway, there are 46 nations involved (Israel didn't show up, understandably.)

Tragedy occurred when a 47 year old South Korean equestrian was killed when his horse threw him off.

There is a sport I have never seen until these games. It looks like volleyball. There are three players on each side. In serving, one player tosses a tiny ball to another player, who kicks it over the net. Then the players on each side use their feet (or any other part of their bodies) to volley the thing around. The game is called sepaktakraw.

The opening ceremonies were beautiful. Two symphony orchestras and several military bands were used.

Vietnam, who I am rooting for at this time, has two Silver and two Bronze medals at this time.

I heard about this on the Beeb World Service. Apparently, there's some serious discussion as to whether this is an appropriate sport for the games.

I have a friend who is the musical arranger for most of what happens in Qatar. He said the music was live, BUT it was electronically enhanced.

Incidentally, those of us who say we hate soccer (and we hate the idea of people of calling that sport "football"), there was a really exciting game on Monday:

I have no idea what was going on in the game, but the fights between Oman and China were great. Those Omanis are great fighters. Maybe it wasn't the intention of the game, but it got my attention.
