dvd to mp3 software? (free?)

Post by bort »

I'm looking for a free, no-hassle program to convert from DVD to MP3 format. (I have a DVD of a band concert I performed in a few years ago, and I want to make a CD of the audio.) I've found a few free programs, but it only will do the first 3 or 5 minutes. Any ideas?

There are rippers that will extract the audio track separate from the video. You might get a wav file that must then be converted to mp3. LAME will do that. This site should get you started.

If you have a home made DVD without encryption, then there will be no legal problems.

I got a DVD ripper called DVD Decrypter off of http://www.doom9.org, and I know that mp4 or m4a is not the format you want, unless you have an iPod, and then it works, but It's called Videora iPod Converter, at http://www.videora.com, which is all free, unless you get the full out Videora. Even puts movies like Napolean Dynamite on my PC!
P.S. DVD Decrypter's files take up a motherload of space. (that being several gig per movie.)
I think I might end up as a grumpy old man when I get old...

I should add that, if you extract a wav file, Audacity will do a good job of converting to mp3, and it is fast. The last version of LAME I used was slow, but it did do a good job.
