Looks pretty good in the photos. Another option for above the door might have been a vent that opens and then can be secured closed. They have a name but I forget it right now. They allow for ventilation in homes before whole house forced air.

And in the topic of perfectly straight lumber. Nearly impossible without custom ordering. Better bet is to buy a piece oversize and then saw and plane it down to the dimensions needed for the finished project.

I don't get the craze for painted trim and cabinetwork. Sure, if you can't afford real wood and have to make do with foam or plastic trim or particle-board cabinetry, you don't have much choice.

A large McMansion was being constructed near my home a few years ago. Really nice stuff went into it, including plastered walls, solid maple floors, cement tile roof, etc.

The owners had some custom cabinetry made--nice clear maple; crisp details, really gorgeous stuff. They probably paid a small fortune for them. So how did they finish them? The same way they finished all of the woodwork (except for the floors): had some guy with some really gloppy latex enamel spray-paint 'em white. Completely ruined all the molding detail; the cabinets might as well have been PVC.

I don't understand decorating trends, myself.

If you buy a house with solid wood trim and doors that are stained - and everything looks pretty good, "brighten things up" by removing said mother-in-law! :D
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

The door looks good, bloke. You got the color pretty close and the gap at the bottom is not a bad thing if a bathroom is close by.
Working on old houses and old boats is time consuming to the point of heart break but every time you see this work you will be glad you took the trouble.
We stripped varnish that had turned poop color and hid the grain in our 1916 house off and on for 10 years. The new stain and polyeurathane look great but my arms and Hariett's knees are shot (our doctor told her she had "maids knees") .
