Just like the one that's been fired up every day at the crack of dawn for the last two weeks at my neighbor's place. That and a couple of chainsaws. His wife wants to improve the view from their living room, so they're taking out about 15 loads of logs...

Heck of an alarm clock...

To me the smaller Jeeps (CJ then Wrangler) snouldn't even be put in the same category as many of these ridiculous SUV's out there that are nothing but ego extensions. The Jeeps got half decent mileage for a real 4x4, only took up 1 parking space, and didn't weigh 2-3 times more than every other vehicle on the road. Perhaps they should make all those posers driving hummer H2's (that are actually outpertformed by the Volvo XC90 offroad except in when in low range) have a bumpersticker that says "I Love Osama"

I wonder what the price difference is between yours and the caddy...
starting prices of $21,560 vs $38,690
Same basic vehicle, but I'd bet a huge difference.
Yesssssssiiiiiiiiireeeeee, same basic vehicle just like the MW 2155 is the same basic tuba as the MW 2000.

(if you don't count the different engines, all wheel drive, and bling).

the Equinox also comes with AWD if you want it, we didnt. Same Gas Mileage
No offense, but there is no way that an all-wheel drive, wether it be a 4x4 or true AWD, can get the same mileage as the 2WD. More moving parts means more friction and more weight equals less efficiency.

To the Minivan arguement:

I owned a 1985 Plymouth Voyager. It had no acceleration. It got OK fuel mileage. It did haul a ton of stuff though and was completely lockable and could do it easily.

I kick myself in the rear end constantly for buying a 2001 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 instead of a Honda Odyssey. Those minivans are huge inside (only 1" narrower than a FULL size truck not a compact as most SUV's are based on) and can haul *** (240hp V-Tech engine, nearly as fast as your Taurus SHO, Joe) and had a resale value that was unbelieveable (only lost on average $600 in value for a one year ownership).

I was convinced I needed 4WD for the snow and the wife told me the minivan wasn't cool. Oh well. At least I still have my 96 GTI. It hauls two tubas (993 besson in the hard case and a 6/4 Holton in a soft case) with luggage and some room to spare with two people and good mileage. My GTI is still running strong with 115,000 miles on it.

My wife and I will never own an SUV. They don't handle and they suck in many areas. Resale will soon deteriorate and most of 'em are just plain ugly. If I ever need to own my own mass-transit vehicle, I will buy another minivan. For now, I will own small cars and be happy. I'll be able to smoke all of you SUV owners with a few engine mods and still sip fuel. I can stop my car and turn it also, something I enjoy to do. Thankfully, the folks in Germany have half a brain and continue to make some well-styled and high performance station wagons. Those hold nearly as much internally as any SUV and still take off, stop and turn as well as getting good mileage.

What really kills me is the mom with two kids (and that is all she will have) driving a Suburban/Excursion/M-1/whatever who can't park it and can't keep it in one lane. Heck, most people, men and women, cannot manuever a compact size truck let alone a full size truck with any real ability. Ahh, but her husband feels safe if she gets into an accident with it. Well, my wife has a clue about driving and her 2003 Jetta 1.8T can keep her out of most accidents because it can EVADE problems unlike those civilian tanks.

It would be amazing what would be on the road if people actually bought what they need to drive instead of what they think they need/want.

i was just making a general statement on the facts of the post,,, just like u but with out ur pic Joe and the embarrassed face works for u,,, add it ,,,,,,,,,,,,smiles
???????

SUV's (jeeps that, for the most part, cannot do the things that real jeeps do) are marketed towards the balding, pot-bellied bourgeoisie who aspire to be more "with it" than those who drive minivans and station wagons...

...Thus, the jeep has been re-engineered into a 4-seater minivan (roughly in the shape of a jeep) to appeal to the pot-bellied bourgeoisie...presto! change-o! The SUV !
I just wanted to read that one more time. The SUV is a largely American phenomenon fueled by folks that want other people to be "cool" and extremely cheap fuel prices.

Most "new" SUVs are based on car platforms. (Awww C'mon! Puhleeeze! A front wheel drive unibody truck?) I can't count the number of times I've heard Mister and Misses should-be-driving-a-minivan talk about how much their shiny new SUV "drives like a car". Ahem, If folks want something that drives like a car, why don't they buy a bloody car ?

I will fall out of my chair and die laughing when some car manufacturer "innovates" and builds an SUV with a sliding side door....

Hey Schlepp
That new mini-mini-van/SUV Toyata Scion XB thing actually has more headroom for the front and rear passengers than a Suburban  and gets over 30MPG. pretty decent cargo room for a little thing, too. And they only start in the $13,xxx's new.

P.S. My father-in-law is a long haul trucker. He got a 3/4 ton extended cab Dodge Cummins Diesel pickup 3 years ago, figured it would be tough like his rig. He paid a fortune for it and has spent almost as much repairing it as on payments for it!

I just throw (not actually throw) my horns in the back of my '85 S-10. Over 300,000 miles on the origional engine and tranny and still going strong!

I am sad to say though that I am getting a new tuba-toting vehicle. Well .... not actually new. It's an '83 chevy van but with only 200,000 miles. So it's really a step up. :D

It won't be as easy loading up my horns as it was in the truck but the bed, captain chairs, and the mini bar make up for it.

I'm glad my SUV doesn't drive like a car. I thjoght about a extended cap truck, but but it was more expensive, and I would need a bed cover for the rainy season.

Give them a few more design cycles, and it'll happen. Kind of like the SUV/truk thing, which looks an alfull lot like a jeep to me (concept wise, not styling).

I looked for a station wagon, but couldn't find anything reasonable. I would much rather hve bought a 65-70 hearse, and add a second bench seat, but my wife refused to drive a hearse :( If the SRX had been out, I'd have got the 3.6L V6 version instead of this Mercury. Couldn't afford to buy (or drive) an Escalade. The V6 SRX (2wd) is rated at 16/23 mpg, about teh same as the Mercury (4L V6) I have.
