Foods that do but shouldn't go together?

So my wife asked me to get some chocolate chip cookies before I came home today...

I am sitting on the couch, reading tubenet, drinking a Schlafly Oatmeal Stout Beer and eating a fresh baked Nestle chocolate chip cookie(still soft and melty!) and it is one of the best food combinations I've ever had. I can't believe this.... Dark beer and chocolate chip cookies? That doesn't make sense to me but I sure am enjoying it. Yes, this is the first beer.

Any other food combinations that have surprised you?

Done it. It requires a certain mood, however.

I've also had cream stout served hot with dark coffee mixed in.


I'm a big fan of bbq potato chips on my sandwich.

Maybe my palate's not as refined as some of you Tubenetters, but to me beer tastes great with anything.

Dad also also eats onion and horseradish sawdwiches on rye. He doesn't drink anymore, but I can remember him washing it down with cold beers on the weekend. You could smell his breath from 10 feet away.

..not so unusual I guess, I still eat 'em too.

I like to put sliced hard boiled eggs on a taco. Along with refried beans. And dont forget about a ice cold stout to wash it down

I'm a big fan of bbq potato chips on my sandwich.

Tuna fish on white toast with potato chips is a personal favorite (especially with Lay's KC Masterpiece chips). My younger brother prefers to use doritos.


Another weird habit of mine is pizza crusts dunked into a glass of coke. Also works with milk. Tasty!

CHOCOLATE KRAUT CAKE

2/3 c. butter
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa
2 1/4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. water
2/3 c. rinsed, drained and chopped sauerkraut

Thoroughly cream butter with sugar. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Sift together dry ingredients: add alternately with water to egg mixture. Stir in kraut. Turn into two greased and floured 8 inch baking pans. Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or until cake tests done.

Rice cakes and processed cheese with salsa...



Believe it or not, it's what the Texas Bar BQ restaurant on Pasteur Street in District 3 of Ho Chi Minh City calls nachos. You can get Doritos here, but they are imported from America and cost about $3.50 for a small bag. I haven't seen any other tortilla chips. Since they make their own flour and corn tortillas at the Texas restaurant, I don't see why they don't make their own tortilla chips... Those rice cakes, which are similar to those unflavored things Quaker Oats makes aren't good as nachos. They also serve them with guacamole, which leaves a lot to be desired. Go for the plain nachos, just as I described them above and it's not too bad.

And you are right, Chuck, the last few entries have been pretty lame.

The picture above is the Texas Bar BQ restaurant, my favorite place in Saigon. There are signs advertising Lone Star beer and several brands of root beer, none of which is available anywhere in Vietnam, from what I have seen in the last seven months.

By the way, if you mix chocolate (unsweetened) and a certain kind of hot sauce you get mole, one of the key ingredients in Mexican cooking. Since I grew up with mole, it doesn't seem that strange to me, but I was making some in my kitchen here and some of my wife's friends couldn't stop laughing.

Lots of beer bars here have pickled (hard boiled) eggs to serve with beer. I would see this in L.A., too.

My friend's favorite snack is dry granola with Tabasco sauce on it. Sweet and spicy, crunchy, delicious!

Another popular snack here in Vietnam is watermelon or pineapple sprinkled with a combination of sugar, hot pepper, salt, and cinnamon. I don't like it.

Peanut butter and dill pickles should probably not go together but taste great.
The pickle juice helps the peanut butter slide down.
