The only time I've ever used a PC without problem is at work where there is a super aggressive (University managed network) spyware/virus protection programs. It's great that they have those things, but if something comparable was put on a PC (in my experience) it's nearly unusable because it hogs over half of your system's resources.
On the flip side. Apple will tell you that you don't need any virus or spyware programs on your computer, and your computer will run smoothly.
I'm more than capable of making a PC work well, I've done it in the past and still do it for my father, but I simply don't have the patience to do it, it's not worth my time or effort, I'd rather enjoy using my Mac.
(as I've said twice prior, if you can't afford a Mac, buy a PC and deal with the problems, or hope you're lucky and don't have any)

The MacBook Pros were just updated yesterday with a new chipset, better video, larger standard hard drives, proper support for 4 GB of RAM, and LED backlighting for the 15" models.
Sytem Shootouts.org posted these new comparisons with similarly-priced Dell systems:

I'd say get a mac...
Though I'm sorta a PC guy, and anti-default O's for iPod, a Mac is a better computer overall. I've read that Mac's are less likely to get viruses, run faster, due to not constantly having to upgrade anti-virus software, and likely cheaper in the long run.
If you get a PC, you NEED anti-virus, if you're connecting to the 'net.

I thing those commercials are great....but they still couldn't get me to fork over the extra money to buy an Apple. It's funny to me how folks compare the prices of name brand pc's to Mac's, but ignore completely the major cost savings that can be had by not buying a big name pc with the same features. A simple pc using free antivirus software is just so much more cost effective than a mac for what most computer users will actually do (surf the web, listen to music, pick up email).tubafatness wrote: ...those stupid, annoying "Mac vs. PC" commercials.
p.s. I've been using only free antivirus software for over 7 years and with no problems.

We can all argue "Which is best?" until the cows come home.
What really matters is can you get the specific software you want on the platform in question? There is certainly a base set of software (browser, email, word processing, etc.) that you'll find on any operating system/platform.
But if you need something specific and it isn't available on e.g. a Mac, then warts and all the sytem it is available on is "better".
Case in point. I've been playing around with Linux for years in the hopes that it would replace my Micro-sloth OS's. It still doesn't have equivalent software. Even the programs it does have that are supposed to be able to replace MS packages (e.g. Star Office) don't have certain features I use on a regular basis.
Like it or not, there's just plain more commercial software easily available for the Micro-sloth platform than any of the others. (Don't get me started on open source.)
OTOH, if you are going to get into software that the Mac excels in, like music editing and recording, then by all means buy a Mac. I certainly would for that.
If one tool could do it all everything would be a hammer.

We use Yahoo Messenger for messages between teachers at my school. Today I was scrolling down my list and one of my contacts had something to click and a link came up. I accidentally clicked the link and it opened a virus. Luckily, the antivirus medicine in the company PC did the trick. I have never had this happen with a Mac. It's about the fourth time this has happened with a PC to me.
