I'm not an engineer, but I am betting that this was a pretty amazing feat....
When I read the topic title, I expected some non-descript rig (a-la Mythbusters), not a full-on humanoid-style robot....
Still, it looks as if the movements were either recorded, or were being rendered in real-time by an actual violinist. I wonder if the robot can respond to its own movements and/or the sounds it produces?

It looks like the robot will have trouble shifting. And does anyone find it strange that there is vibrato, yet his left hand doesn't look like it's doing anything?Dean wrote:I'm not an engineer, but I am betting that this was a pretty amazing feat....

Found a better video. It zooms in to show that each individual finger moves. The news guy calls it a "tremolo effect."BopEuph wrote:And does anyone find it strange that there is vibrato, yet his left hand doesn't look like it's doing anything?

Much better done a long time ago -- The Mills Violano Virtuoso:

More pictures here.
Heres a Youtube video of one playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXq6C_7vs-A
Or for the European take on the robot violin see, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_MO8Pw0yys

I think a group of those would be perfect to sneak into the orchestra at your typical large-college graduation ceremonies. It would make those absurdly long processionals and recessionals easier to handle.windshieldbug wrote:Does it know anything besides Pomp?
Does it tune sharp, too?![]()
Better yet, can it play the viola!?![]()
(or do only failed robots do that?)
