You know, Oprah is a marketing genius. There are women who would rather lose a limb (seemingly) than miss her show.
She panders to youth by discussing things on air such as a "tossed salad" or a "rainbow party".
She brings out celbrities and gets them to cry to show that tehy are like the "rest of us".
She gives crap ($$$$$ worth of it) at least four times a year to show what a humanitarian she is.
She put on a blow-hard fat-*** that "fixes" peoples heads and writes diet books even though he looks like a heart attack waiting to happen.
She preys on the weak and their fear of the outside world. Her show does not help anyone, it hinders them.
Even worse, the fools that received these cars think that Oprah shelled out the dough for 'em. Pontiac probably had to foot at least 90% of the bill (figuring on the lukewarm response this vehicle has gotten thusfar) to get these cars on TV.
I see nearly as much substance in Jerry Springer's show. At least he has no bones about what he does or tries to seem above it all. Even better, he offers some decent advice at the end of the show. Oprah can barely form an opinion on her own anymore without her writing and production staff.
I just hope these folks enjoy their new GM, first generation, no bugs-worked-out-yet, POS's. They'd probably be best off to sell the car to cover the tax they have to pay to the IRS and invest in a good used Honda Accord or the like.

Matt, in my opinion you are being a bit harsh on Oprah. I don't watch her show, although I have seen it a few times. In my opinion, she is probably real. And whether or not the "gifts" come out of her pocket makes no difference. If you gets the ball rolling and someone receives the gift, the net effect is the same.

I know, you were talking to the other Joe. I'm not answering for him, but for myself.wnazzaro wrote:Joe, I always thought you were in favor of charity. What has Oprah done wrong here, or are you celebrating her generosity?
I for one wouldn't criticize her for giving the cars away. To me, that's a freedom thing -- if she wants to give away cars, and people want to think she's something extra-special, fine by me. But all the same, I think it's pretty crass and somewhat self-serving to do your giving on television. Jesus said that those who give in public where others can see already have their reward in full -- that when you give alms you should do it so that your left hand doesn't know what your right hand is doing. So she has already gotten all the reward she is due. Thus, I won't criticize her but I won't praise her either.

I will stick by my comments that Oprah is no different than any other personality that goes for shock value on TV.
She is sexually explicit and gets away with it because "people like her". Basically, she has someone else describe the act and then acts shocked and can't believe it. BS. I'm sure she is present during pre-production meetings. Basically, the "feel, felt, found" theory.
She does promote herself as "pious" just because she gives crap away. Why not do something to stop these people from getting into those situations where they have nothing? Oh, that takes more time and effort. That takes dedication. That takes MONEY. She spends next to nothing for what she gives away except time on her show. The stuff she does give away is nothing but a quick distraction for those with real problems. Kinda like when you send flowers to someone recovering from an illness/surgery. It is a nice gesture, but does little to alleviate the persons root problems.
Her reward for her supposed generosity is in her checking account. With a net worth of over one billion (nine zero's) we know what her ultimate goal is.
When Oprah opens up her 50,000 square foot home to help educate an enlighten those in real need someone call me.

It won't be long.bloke wrote:...so far: no dorn stars"
Folks like Oprah have helped turn this mainstream. I know people say it is the likes of Howard Stern and similar folk, but I doubt far fewer kids listen to some old guy talk on the radio from 6am to 10am than those who plop their chubby rearend on the couch to watch Oprah at 4pm on the boob-tube. Plus, many of these kids mom's think Oprah is informative and non-offensive.
So instead of parents learning what goes on from paying attention to their kids, they'll learn how to deal with their kids by watching Oprah. We all know what a great mom she is...
Oh, wait she doesn't have any kids!
