It could very likely be folks probing for oil deposits.
My mom worked for Conoco about 20 years ending in the early 80s. She was a geophysicist, and part of her job was analyzing the seismic graphs brought back from the field...certain patterns indicated potential petroleum deposits.
I was fortunate, for a while in high school, to have a job there as a digitizer...I took the raw graphs and traced them with a plotter to transfer them to computer data. Very primitive stuff by today's standards.
