Anyone Twitter?

Post by HGillespie »

OK, call it a New Years Resolution, or just me going off the deep end. WHAD EVVA! I'm a "hobbiest" who is making 2009 her very own "year of the tuba." I'm "Twitting" my steps to rekindling my passion for the horn. You are welcome to visit my profile and comment.

YUP...I would LOVE comments. If you dare, you can visit my blog at Skirt.com too.

Sometime around Thanksgiving 2009, if I can make enough progress, I may even put down some bucks for a new horn....what ever "enough progress" means.

Thank you. I figure that if I publically proclaim a musical reemergence, I'll have a greater commitment to this reemergence. Hummmm this tactic didn’t work for the novel I started to write 10 years ago, but who knows? Perhaps I’ll get out the pompoms and cheer myself on.

Six valves? Does that hurt?

Welcome Helen - I'm also a come-back player. (I have one horn that's sat in a corner of my living room for 30 years, unplayed) Best thing I did was join two bands - a Community band where I'm with much better players than myself, and a community college band where I'm one of the better players. This gives a chance to learn from one, and pass it on to the other. (And keeps me honest & motivated with the practice  )

I'ts easy to fall in love with the tuba again. :tuba:

You are right about community bands. I played a few times each month before relighting my passion....which happened to be sparked by playing in the Falls Church Concert Band when I was in the DC area (Army Reserve Assignment) for a year and needed a stress release.

When I returned to my home (Huntsvile, AL) I rejoined the concert band here. In both places I've encountered a great group of folks who are quite talented...sometimes intimidating they are so talented. But, I just suck it up, let it go, and enjoy myself. I do, however, miss the Four Provinces Irish Pub we used to visit after practice in Falls Church.

Now I would like to play in some smaller ensambles so I could develop that "feel" of blending without the pounding. I don't know how else to explain it.

Welcome!
I started a similar journey two years ago, getting back into music after a 20 year layoff (and as a stress reliever for my deputy sheriff job!) and had set the goal of joining a band and playing in a tuba christmas concert before I got a new horn. I've had my tuba for a year and a half, and air is STILL a challenge. Better than at the beginning, though!
