Windows and HVAC tax deductions??

Post by MartyNeilan »

Last year I purchased a house that needed some work. Among the improvements were having a high efficieny HVAC unit installed and replacing all the windows with Energy Star thermal windows. I was anticipating being able to get a credit, or write them off entirely, on my taxes this year. After not being able to find a place to plug them into my "premium" tax software, I did some research. Then I found this on a gub'mint website:
"On October 3, 2008, President Bush signed into law the “Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008.” This bill extended tax credits for energy efficient home improvements (windows, doors, roofs, insulation, HVAC, and non-solar water heaters). Tax credits for these residential products, which had expired at the end of 2007, will now be available for improvements made during 2009. However, improvements made during 2008 are not eligible for a tax credit."

Any tax gurus on TubeNet have any ideas, or am I just screwed because I picked the wrong year to finally buy a home? :|
