Why drink beer? 'Cause there are some folks like me that are allergic to wine, love beer, and are too damned cheap to buy top-tier whisky.

Now, if it would've been an option, Sake would definitely get my vote.

I like liquor and everything, but it's too easy to get sloppy drunk on the stuff...especially if you can't taste it in the lemonade they put it in at parties... haha!

It is not too commonly known that New Jersey is the third largest producer of cranberries in the US...this year at Thanksgiving, I tried cranberry wine, both red and white...I have to say, it was quite delicious!

I don't drink very often. I will buy a six pack (usually Sam Adams or Corona) and it might last me a month. However, when I do have a drink, it will most often be a nice, single malt Scotch, or if it's hot, a Tanqueray and tonic.

Based on the collection of returnable bottles on my deck, it appears that any sort of seasonal brew from a west coast microbrewery seems to be my drink of choice. I prefer ales, in the amber range, although there are some darker ones. I was recently introduced to a Mango Mojito, however, and that was pretty tasty.

I've been enjoying single-malt scotch lately. Can get a load of enjoyment out of a very small amount of that stuff.

I'm not really that much of a drinker, but I do drink some beer. In Vietnam, the beer of choice was Tiger beer. Here in the Philippines, they often tell you that the beer of choice is San Miguel. However, once you get to know Filipinos, you discover that this is the choice of Filipinas (women). Men usually drink a brand of beer called Red Horse, which is manufactured by San Miguel.

Image

Red Horse has an alcohol content of about 6%. It's one of the few beers that you can actually taste the alcohol. The Filipinos call this "premium strong beer," which is better than what the Americans call it...

...malt liquor!

Colt 45 has a 7.2% alcohol content! I don't know why men who drink it are called sissies!

Well, if it is set in front of me, I will say, "Thank you," and not turn it down. As a guy who has had the occasion in the long distant past to spend time in both the Heineken brewery and the Bass Ale brewery, I am surprised to say that recently I've been drinking Busch Light, and actually enjoying it.

Hm, 6% is pretty near the average alcohol content for ales around here. Quick check of the refrigerator shows 6.6%, 6.5%, and 5.6%. It depends somewhat on the style, but I'm pretty sure I've seen ordinary ales get up to 8%. We had a 9.7% last week, but that's a "barleywine" style that isn't terribly popular.

In view of the self-righteous condemnation of other recreational drugs in another Tubenet thread, I should probably mention that I've seen someone die of alcoholism, have the death certificate to prove it, and that isn't exactly a rare event. But it's cool, there's no point in trying to make it a black and white issue. Personally I've been thrilled to see American straight ryes come back into bigger production, would recommend checking the shelves for Rittenhouse "bottled in bond" and Pikesville Supreme, for those who might enjoy a robust classic American spirit.

One difference between alcohol and "other recreational drugs" is the legality. Arguments can be made for or against the legalization/criminalization of both, but you can't refute something's legality. Besides, isn't it historically more natural to drink something rather than smoke something? Or sniff something? Or inject something?

Historically? Alcohol hasn't always been legal, historically, but it hasn't ever mattered much one way or the other.

I personally detest smoke, so yes, beer, rye whiskey, punch spiked with LSD, etc. would tend to be more up my alley. But smoking is surprisingly widespread. The original use for tobacco was a really giant stogie, one end set in the fire and some guy hauling on the other end until he keeled over and saw God. The Chinese smoked opium, not sure what the Turks and Arabs were smoking in those hookahs. But just about any method you can think of. There's a tree bark preparation with a lot of DMT-related hallucinogens that the guys would force up their noses with a sort of blowgun - you sit back with the thing in your nose, and the other guy gives you a blast. The concoctions they would drink usually would taste awful and get spewed back up, so it's a question of what's worse.

Historically, or rather pre-historically, alcohol would tend to be at most one of the consciousness altering options, until cities and agriculture settle in. At that point, you have an oversupply of starches if you're lucky, and you need a complacent workforce, so you start a brewery. Physiological types with the worst predispositions to alcoholism die off over time, and in a couple of centuries it becomes one of your weapons of conquest - you can turn the natives on to alcohol, and for the next few generations they won't have a lot of fight left in them. All these good things hopefully outweigh the cost to your own society, which will be enormous.

Which is not to say I'm against it, in fact I'm looking forward to an outing tonight at a local brew pub. Yesterday was delighted to find a nice Muscatel at the grocery (they spell it Moscatel like they're kidding someone, but it's the same stuff), but for a sharp hit of muscat I haven't run into anything that compares with a Chilean pisco. Did I mention the rye whiskey? I'm just saying, look it in the face. Back in the '70s someone looked at whiskey magazine ads etc. and claimed to be able to pick out skull images in the ice cubes, supposedly subliminally tickling the viewer in a way that might help sales, but maybe it was just truth in advertising.
