Wireless router

Post by bort »

For the IT folks out there...

My wireless router seems to drop my Internet connection VERY frequently. Maybe a dozen times per day, and twice (so far) while typing this. It usually restores a connection in a few seconds, but it can take longer, and is quite inconvenient. It's a wireless issue, when I am hardwired I have no problems.

I'm fairly certain it's a router issue, not a laptop issue (since I see the orange connection out light pop up briefly on the router).

Now... my question is, is it something that's fixable? When I disconnect the power and reset the router/modem, it helps briefly. But what a hassle. Or is it just that routers are cheaply made and break quickly? It's a Belkin and I've had it less than 2 years, and it seems like it should still be fine. (Though companies would go out of business pretty quickly if their products lasted forever! :))

Thanks bloke... cordless phone is far away, and strangely, I get the *worst* reception when I'm about 5 feet away from it.

Another possibility: How many wireless devices do you have connected to the router at any given time? Routers have a certain number of internal antennas with which to connect to any wireless device. If you have more devices than antennas, the router will seem to randomly drop devices and reconnect to them. Just a thought...

Is your wireless router secure? Otherwise, many others can be using your signal.

Thanks for the input...

-- It is secure
-- Only 2 laptops connected to it
-- Haven't thought about firmware, but can give that a go

If it is interference, maybe I need a stronger router then? I'm in a very "congested" environment, with about 30 wireless networks visible to me. Could that be part of it?

My first guess would be check the output of the power supply. When I had one go bad on my old router, it acted strange for months before I figured out that was the problem.

Firmware updated and channel changed... so far, so good! Never would have thought of either! TubeNet tech support to the rescue! :)

Sorry if this is a thread hijack, but does anybody have a recommendation for a good, not-to-expensive ($40 - $50 range) wireless router? We don't have one in our house, but want to get one for two uses:

- We want to move our desktop computer to a room that does not have an Internet connection; and
- We want to connect our Wii to the Internet.

That's about all we would be using the router for.

This one should work for that...
it has Wireless G, which is what a Wii requires...
As far as a desktop computer goes, you'll have to make sure that you have the right wireless internet card installed. Along with that, it can still be iffy, depending how far you are away from the router.
