Two computer questions...

Post by Wes Krygsman »

Has anyone else had a problem installing the new version(1.0) of Mozilla Firefox? I tried to update yesterday and ever since I did, it wouldn't work. I tried numerous times to fix it(reload, re download). I even checked their site and the site's forum but none of the solutions seemed to work(plus there were way too many posts to read them all). I guess the real question is, does anyone know how to fix this?

The second question is: Does anyone have a broadband wireless router(linksys)? We just bought one, but I'm afraid to set it up. Should I try it(I do follow directions very well) or should i get some one who knows much more about this stuff?

Thanks in advance to all who reply. This Tubenet community is great.

I'm not sure what the problem is.
Waht doesn't work? What verion to what version? What OS?

It's just a router. The real issue is security for wireless access. Lock it down as tight as you can. Max the encryption options. Linit access using MAC addresses and anything else you can. Without knowing the router you have and access(which cards, what OS) on the other end, I cannot help more.

The most obvious question:
Did you remove the old Firefox, or did you install 1.0 on top of the earlier one? In the past that gave a lot of problems.
If you uninstall, normally your profile folder should be kept and picked up by the new install. (allthough officially you should remove and reinstall your profile too. Never did personally)

Ditto what Sean said - get an IT buddy to help. Also, if your router has NAT (Network Address Translation) by all means turn it on. While far from foolproof, NAT is another effective anti-hacking tool and I have used it in every network I ever setup. The PC's on your internal network will use different addresses (typically a 10.0.0.x or 192.168.x.x scheme) than what you appear to the outside world.

Ok, to try to answer all the questions in this post.

I'm using a Sony Vaio PCG-K23 laptop computer. OS=Windows XP.

The version of Firefox I was trying to upgrade to was the new 1.0 version, and I'm not sure what version I had but the old version worked.

I did not uninstall before I tried to install it. Then I retried it a few times and uninstalled and installed it and it won't work(the program opens but the error message"This Page Cannot Be Found" pops up no matter what I try to open with it).

As for the router, I didn't really feel comfortable setting it up in the first place. I'm not very computer savvy and it seemed like a bad idea from the start, thanks for all your advice on this and I will get someone who actually knows what they're doing to do it.

I'm not real familiar with XP yet, but...
The version of Firefox I was trying to upgrade to was the new 1.0 version, and I'm not sure what version I had but the old version worked.
Switching versions can be difficult if there is much lag between them. Especially in the OSS world. Changes happen fast.

Did you check you preferences? Do you need a proxy seting? The new version might not have migrated you profile, and therefore not have those settings. Since the app is up, just not talking on the net, that's my first idea.
You might try opening a local file to check the rendering engine.
Also try these in the address bar: "about:" and "about:config"
