concert attire

I wear a "dress" shirt everyday. I launder, starch and iron them (12 identical) myself. I own 6 "tuxedo" shirts (full collar) and 2 "tails" shirts (with the stand-up collars) that I launder, starch, and iron as well. The cut away collars are only for white ties, as you know.

I used to do the whole deal: pleated shirt with studs, cummerbund, tie your own tie, fake patent leather shoes, etc. Now, there are two reasons I wear formal wear: 1) performing with a tuba and 2) performing with a bass guitar. Both instruments cover the waist and chest area. So the cummerbund is history and I wear a wrap around bow tie with a plain, straight collar shirt 1/2 inch larger in the neck than my regular shirt so I am not restricted and that has been properly commercially laundered and pressed. My tux pants are an inch larger in the waist than my regular suit pants so I can wear them with suspenders and breathe.

This post actually made me chuckle. The standard concert attire at my university is:
-Black tux jacket and pants
-Black shoes and socks
-Pleated white tux shirt
-Funky white vest
-White bow tie
The director of the school of music, Dr. Bankhead, ranted to the group about our wacky concert dress at a gig he conducted. He said that a "proper" concert tux should be all of the above but instead of white vest and tie it SHOULD be a black tie and cumberbund. I can just see him now bi***ing about it. HA!

As for me, I sit in the back so MOST people don't notice any variants. Usually it's a black jacket and pants of some variety, a clean white shirt (pleats don't matter that far back, and by clean I mean it hasn't been crumpled up in my truck and is somewhat presentable) and the standard issue white tie and vest.

Play in Civil War re-enactment group----------you will never have to wash or iron-----the worse you smell and the worse you look ,the more authenic you are.

Depends on the concert. With the Ashland City Band, we have a uniform of teal golf shirt (with band logo on it, supplied by the band unless you want an extra or you lose/ruin your shirt), white slacks, white socks, and white shoes. With the orchestra, I wear my After Six/Pierre Cardin tux (bought in practically new condition at a Goodwill for $12 after my 20% senior discount), matching bow tie and cummerbund (black with gold notes on them), treble clef studs (couldn't find any bass clef ones) and music cufflinks (came with the studs as a set), and patent leather shoes. We perform six times during the year and the shirt gets laundered twice a year and the tux dry cleaned as necessary (usually every couple of years). I rarely wear the tux for anything other than orchestra concerts. For other gigs it depends on what is called for. Got my lederhosen for the rare German band gigs, but didn't have them handy for last Oktoberfest when I got called in on fairly short notice to play drum set for a small group (trumpet, tuba, accordion, and drums).
