My son is a little older (4 1/2) but if I hold the tuba up for him he can get some sort of buzz going and actually get a tuba-ish sound out of the horn (better than some middle schoolers), even though the mouthpiece is obviously too big for his face. He also likes to move the valves when I hold out a note. He says that he wants a trombone when he gets older, so in just a few short years he might have the chops to handle that. Tuba will probably have to wait until about ten.
