Anybody know of a folk instrument that is 100% metal and will make music? I need something to mess with and due to environmental considerations it's going to have to be 100% metal, no plastic, no cellulose.

There are one or two ukuleles in that style, too. I can't guess whether it's an issue - some metal instruments may have anodized color, or lacquer.iiipopes wrote:National or Dobro guitar?
Some penny whistles are all metal. The penny whistle's heyday as a folk music instrument has kind of come and gone, so the later generation of higher quality instruments should be available and reasonably priced.

Turkish clarinets are made out of metal.

Re: all metal folk instruments
I've seen a Turkish clarinet - metal body, but this one had an ordinary rubber (or plastic, don't recall) mouthpiece. I am pretty sure a metal clarinet reed is beyond the reach of modern science. The pads were not metal. And, can't guess whether this would be a problem, but the mechanism would have been oiled at some point.

That was my first thought... also called a "tin whistle", not sure which will get you more hits on Google...Donn wrote:Some penny whistles are all metal. Good luck!

Re: all metal folk instruments
Controversial I know, but some people believe that Jamaican steel drums make music.
Also controversial a gamelan (but I'm not sure if that comes under folk or classical, or whether it counts as an instrument or a whole orchestra)
How about a glockenspiel/bell-lyre ? vibraphone ?
tubular bells ?
Hand bells (or a peal of church bells) ?
Flute, fife etc. can be metal
Sistrum
Spoons
Can you get an all-metal harmonica ?
Pan-pipes ?
Bass horn (all metal successor to the serpent - and didn't I read somewhere about an all-brass serpent ?)
Someone must have made a metal ocarina.
Block-flute instruments (whistles, recorders, flageolets...)
Swanee whistle (don't know what the slider is made of)
You could probably make a thumb-piano instrument on a metal sound-box
I've seen discussions of an aluminum string bass, but it probably had a wooden neck.

Re: all metal folk instruments
Thanks all. So far, I think that my best bet is going to be to keep my horn (haven't made too much of an effort to sell it, and it is in storage) and hope that I get into a living situation where I could at least have a stereo to play along with.
