Band in Annville, PA

Post by Lew »

A while ago I posted on the board asking about community bands to play with in the Hershey, PA area since I will be teaching at Lebanon Valley College this Fall. In searching some of the community band sites I came across the Washington Band of Annville:

http://www.washingtonband.com/" target="_blank" target="_blank

I contacted them and will be attending my first rehearsal in September after I get there. I just thought the history of this band was interesting. It seems rare to me to find a band that has been in continuous operation since before the Civil War. It's just a bonus that they are located in the same town as the school at which I will be teaching.

Anybody else playing in a band that has been around since 1856 or earlier?

The Ringgold Band of Reading has been playing since 1852.

We have a few members that come in from the Lebanon area. You may know Lynn, one of our euphonium players.

It's a bit of a haul, but come on out. We rehearse Monday's 7:30-9:30PM.

At last count we had more tubas than trombones, so it's a good band

St James Brass and Reed established 1800 playing with them since 1985.
We have a lot of history in the band it participated in numerous events leading to the formation of the state and for a brief period before the formation of the army school of music the band acted as the state band. We have a tuba player that is coming up to 80 years service to the band.

The Ashland City Band (Ashland, OR) has been playing since 1876...not bad for a state that celebrated statehood in 1859. This is the band that I sit in with every summer for at least one gig. My regular band (Springfield Community Concert Band) celebrates its 20th season this summer. Oregon doesn't have much in the way of historic buildings much more than 170 years old.
