Bruno Bartoletti, renowned conductor and former Artistic Director of the Lyric Operal of Chicago, died yesterday (June 9, 2013) in Florence, Italy.
Maestro Bartoletti was associated with Lyric from 1956 to 2007, serving much of that time as principal conductor and Artistic Director. He also worked with operal houses throughout Europe, including LaScala, and was both highly respected and much beloved by orchestral musicians.
My first impression of his work came from a performance he conducted of "La Traviata" on December 6, 1965. It was a special performance for students of the Chicago Public Schools and was the first live opera performance I had ever attended. I have never forgotten this performance and believe it was one the major events influencing my love for classical music.
Rest in peace, Maestro.
RIP: Bruno Bartoletti
