Alexander Lebedev

Post by Skaichinger »

I've been trying to find information about this composer. I plan on playing his Concerto in One Movement for tuba, but I can't find any history of biography of the man.

Here is another fascinating source complete with pictures. The last paragraph is what you want but read the whole thing. Lebedev was Blazhevitch's grandson. Who would have thought.

"Grandson" is in quotes in the article, with the explanation that Lebedev studied with a student of Blazhevitch. Not really his grandson.

Good catch. I missed it. I guess I am the "grandson" of Jacobs then. That sounds nice.

My son has also been fooling around with the Lebedev concerto (although he's absolutely not ready for it yet). Nice to see some biographic information on the composer. I had read somewhere that Lebedev had a long career as a teacher, and his works are mostly teaching tools for his students.

But that usage of using "child" or "grandchild" for student/teacher relationships is common in eastern Europe. Using this logic, my kid is a grand-student of Roger Bobo - which proves that sometimes the apple does fall very far from the tree. I am an amateur piano player, and a great-great-grandchild of Franz Liszt via two different paths: My great-grandfather was a student of Liszt (and later director of the music academy in Budapest), and my piano teacher was a great-grandstudent of Liszt (via the path Istvan Thoman -> Ilona Kabos -> Roberto Szidon). Which does nothing for my playing; actually practicing would help a lot more.
