I think you guys are trying to portray Bloke as saying something he didn't say. I don't believe he's saying that Philly is unique in being a cruddy place to live, but that our large cities IN GENERAL are. I grew up in Dallas, and it was a fine place to live in the 60s. Not so today, unless you are in one of the gated communities in N. Dallas (and I have no use for the snobbery that is all too common there, either).

For a lot of people (I'm one), living in one of these heaps of human misery known as a big city would be an option of last resort. If I had a paycheck that, combined with teaching and freelance income, was paying the bills, there's NO WAY I'd consider moving to one of those big cities.
